**Ethereum's Next Big Move: The Surge**

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled ambitious plans for Ethereum’s future in a blog post dated October 17. Dubbed "The Surge," the roadmap aims to boost Ethereum's transaction speed to over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) across its mainnet and layer 2 (L2) blockchains. Buterin emphasized the need for Ethereum to function as a cohesive ecosystem rather than fragmented blockchains.

Key goals include:

- Enhancing interoperability between L2s

- Achieving trustless rollups to inherit Ethereum’s core properties

- Improving user experience across L2 networks

Buterin acknowledged the success of Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap, bolstered by the Dencun upgrade in March, but noted it introduced unique challenges. These upgrades aimed to reduce data costs and lower fees on L2 networks. Critics argue that L2s are siphoning users and revenue from Ethereum’s mainnet, raising security risks and making Ether (ETH) inflationary.

To address these issues, Buterin proposed solutions like data availability sampling, better data compression, and making computations cheaper without sacrificing decentralization. He highlighted the importance of scaling the Ethereum base chain to keep up with demand, warning that a low-capacity L1 could pose risks if L2s become highly scalable.

Buterin also stressed the need for a seamless user experience across L2 networks, suggesting easier token transfers between chains without manual bridging or swapping.

Historically, Ethereum aimed to scale using sharding, but Buterin shifted focus to rollups in 2020. Now, the goal is to complete the rollup-centric roadmap while maintaining Ethereum’s robustness and decentralization.
