Hong Kong police have arrested 27 people for their alleged involvement in a romance scam that defrauded victims of about HK$360 million ($46 million) worth of cryptocurrency over the past year. The group, comprising men and women aged 20 to 30, mostly from Hong Kong, India, Singapore, and Malaysia, allegedly lured victims into investing in cryptocurrency through romance scams. Police seized 41 computers and 137 smartphones during a raid on the group. Romance scams have become increasingly common in recent years, with fraudsters using online dating platforms and social media to target victims. They often create fake profiles and engage in romantic conversations with victims before eventually persuading them to invest in cryptocurrency or other financial products. Victims who fall for these scams often lose significant amounts of money. It is important to be aware of the risks of romance scams and to be cautious about sharing personal or financial information with people you meet online.
