🚹 Vitalik Buterin Considered a Dark Horse for 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is emerging as a surprise contender for the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, sparking excitement in the crypto and academic communities alike. Economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, hosts of the Marginal Revolution podcast, highlighted Buterin's transformative work in the world of monetary economics and decentralized finance as a reason for his candidacy.

Cowen described Buterin as an “unusual pick,” but emphasized that his contributions to creating a decentralized platform and cryptocurrency merit recognition. He also noted that Buterin's achievements follow in the footsteps of Bitcoin’s anonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, who he believes also deserved the Nobel but remains elusive.

Buterin’s innovation, especially his shift of Ethereum from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, was hailed as an unprecedented achievement in the evolution of blockchain technology. Tabarrok praised this development, likening it to the high-risk feat of “changing a car’s tires while it’s moving,” further underscoring Buterin’s technical brilliance.

While Buterin’s candidacy for the Nobel Prize is seen as unconventional, his impact on modern monetary theory and decentralized finance is undeniable. Could the crypto pioneer be in line for one of the most prestigious awards in economics? We’ll find out on Oct. 14 when the Nobel Committee reveals the winner.
