Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital at the age of 86. He had been in critical condition and was receiving intensive care in the hospital over the past few days. On Monday, Tata had shared that he was undergoing routine medical evaluations due to age-related health concerns.

A towering figure in Indian industry, Ratan Tata served as the chairman of Tata Group from 1990 until 2012, and briefly returned as interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017. Beyond his business acumen, Tata was renowned for his philanthropic efforts, leading the company’s charitable trust which directs over half of its profits towards various social causes. His contributions to the nation were recognized with two of India’s highest civilian honors: the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
