According to reports, former Russian prosecutor Marat Tambiyev was recently sentenced to 16 years in prison for allegedly receiving 1,032 Bitcoin bribes from the hacker group Infraud. The case, involving more than $65 million, is considered one of the largest bribery cases in Russian history. Russian authorities discovered an Apple laptop in Tambiyev’s home that contained millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin “pension funds.”

Hackers offer tens of millions of Bitcoins as bribes, an irresistible temptation

Marat Tambiyev served on the Russian Federal Investigative Committee (ICR) in 2011 and was accused in 2022 of accepting tens of millions of bitcoins in bribes from the hacker group Infraud to help members of the group, Kirill Samokutyaevsky and Konstantin Bergmanov, keep their illegal gains.

Authorities said Tambiyev accepted the Bitcoin bribe on April 7, 2022, on the condition that he would not seize Infraud’s ill-gotten gains, thereby helping the members involved in the case avoid criminal liability.

Bitcoin “pension” found in Apple laptop

In early 2023, Russian authorities found a Pingo laptop in Tambiyev's home, which contained a folder called Pension. This folder contained two wallet private keys, with a total of 1,032 in the wallet. Bitcoin.

Authorities said the huge amount of money was not part of Tambiyev’s salary, as he earned at most $144,000 during his 12 years in office, making it clear that the bitcoins were illegally obtained.

Tambiyev calls out injustice and is determined to defend himself against accusations that are false.

Tambiyev, who denies all corruption charges and claims he was framed, has also sued Russian authorities and is seeking reinstatement and compensation for losses incurred during his suspension. However, authorities eventually dismissed Tambiyev's complaint after obtaining strong evidence that he was indeed involved in the bribery case. Although his appeal was rejected, Tambiyev is determined to fight to the end, and a Russian court is expected to hold a new round of hearings next Monday, with prosecutors demanding the confiscation of his Bitcoin assets.

Not only was Tambiyev on trial in this bribery case, but his colleague Kristina Lyakhovenko was also sentenced to nine years in prison. Both denied the charges, but Tambiyev claimed that he was framed. He will appeal again and continue to defend himself.
