The U.S. government filed two legal complaints on Oct. 4, 2024, seeking to seize more than $2.67 million in stolen digital assets from the North Korean hacker group Lazarus. The targeted assets include approximately $1.7 million worth of Tether (USDT) stolen in the 2022 Deribit hack and approximately $970,000 worth of Avalanche-bridged-Bitcoin (BTC.b) stolen in the 2023 Stake.com hack.
The Lazarus Group is considered the likely culprit behind many crypto hacks. The Deribit and Stake.com attacks represent only a small portion of the attacks attributed to the Lazarus Group. Onchain detectives believe that the WazirX exchange lost $235 million in July 2024, which was also carried out by the group.
In August 2024, onchain detective ZackXBT revealed that North Korean developers had infiltrated at least 25 crypto projects. The FBI issued a series of warnings about social engineering scams against the Lazarus Group in September 2024.
