Edward Snowden Slams Solana While Praising Bitcoin Against the State

Former NSA employee Edward Snowden touched on important cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Solana at the Token2049 conference and discussed the different approaches of both platforms and their results.

Praising Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as systems resistant to state intervention, Snowden warned against government efforts to control digital communication. Snowden stated that applications should be designed in a way that the state cannot control, saying, “You have to design your application in a way that the state cannot point a gun at, otherwise they will do that.”

Snowden also referred to the European Union’s “chat control” proposal, emphasizing that such initiatives pave the way for governments to gain more control over global communication.

Snowden criticized the Solana network

On the other hand, Snowden harshly criticized the centralization structure of the Solana blockchain. While acknowledging that Solana has technological advantages in terms of speed and efficiency, he stated that these advantages are achieved at the expense of decentralization during Token2049, which he attended via video link.

Snowden stated that the Solana team took good ideas and chose to centralize everything in order to build a faster, more efficient and cheaper network, and that the Solana blockchain is only used for memecoins and scams.
