The crypto advocacy group Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) and patent-focused organization Unified Patents have launched a campaign against “patent trolls” targeting blockchain and crypto technology.

COPA noted in an October 1 blog post that the campaign, called “Blockchain Zone,” targets patents under the control of non-practicing entities (NPEs) covering technologies such as NFTs, wallets, and smart contracts.

The partnership aims to protect blockchain companies and developers from “unfair and costly” legal claims by patent trolls who use the high costs of court battles to force them to make deals.

Unified Patents CEO Kevin Jakel said the partnership ensures that the crypto sector will not be hampered by false patent claims that affect other economic sectors.
