Dagestan cracks down on underground bitcoin mining facilities
Authorities in the Russian republic of Dagestan have called for tough action against illegal bitcoin mining facilities, which have spread to pose a major threat to electricity infrastructure.
Dagestanâs Prime Minister Abduslam Abduslimov warned that the massive electricity consumption by these facilities had caused a fire at a substation near the regionâs capital, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
He explained that the owners of these facilities are resorting to new methods to hide their activities, as they build huge mining facilities in caves and underground sites, making them difficult to detect.
The Dagestan government published illustrative images showing investigators raiding one of these secret facilities, which contains a large number of computers and cooling fans.
