• Bitcoin (BTC) mining company Hut 8 has launched a GPU service, becoming the first cloud AI development company to generate revenue from a GPU cluster. The cluster, located in a Tier 3 data center in Chicago, includes several Hewlett Packard Enterprise Cray supercomputers powered by 1,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs.

Hut 8 partnered with HPE and AdvizeX to design, configure and commission the cluster, which was operated by a subsidiary of Highrise #AI . The company signed a five-year contract with this cloud-based AI development company, including a fixed infrastructure fee and revenue sharing.

With the launch of the GPU-as-a-service, our compute layer has become even more diversified, spanning AI computing, #bitcoin #mining and traditional cloud services, said Asher Genuth, CEO of Hut 8,

This new vertical service aims to maximize revenue from energy assets and digital infrastructure by expanding our compute layer. For instance, TeraWulf reported a 243.2% increase in energy costs.

The move by Hut 8 to create a vertical dedicated to artificial intelligence and cloud computing is therefore not surprising. Moreover, it is in line with the efforts of other mining companies.

In June, Core Scientific announced a partnership to supply 70 megawatts for Coreweave's Nvidia GPUs. In addition, according to Reuters, 20% of bitcoin mining capacity is expected to shift to AI by the end of 2027.
