Trump buys fans burgers with bitcoin at bar

Trump once again courted the digital asset community on Wednesday, treating supporters to burgers at a bar in New York City and paying with bitcoin.

Trump reportedly arrived at PubKey, a bitcoin-themed bar near New York University, to boos and shouts of "loser." However, when he walked into the dimly lit bar, he was greeted with applause from people who described themselves as bitcoin enthusiasts and Trump supporters.

"Who wants a burger?" asked Trump, who has been courting cryptocurrency enthusiasts not only for votes and campaign donations, but also for support for a new project he and his sons have been promoting called World Free Finance.

Trump spent $998.70 on dozens of burgers, according to PubKey co-founder Drew Armstrong. He paid for the meal using a payment app called Strike, which is built on the Lightning Network. The bar used the Zaprite app to receive bitcoin, the oldest and largest cryptocurrency that has yet to live up to its promise as a universal medium of exchange for transactions.

"Bitcoin is really happening," Trump said.

The stop, reportedly on his way to a rally on Long Island, was Trump's latest effort to win over cryptocurrency holders. Although cryptocurrencies have long been plagued by scams and scandals, they have gained more mainstream recognition this year.

In July, Trump delivered a keynote speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, promising to appoint cryptocurrency-friendly regulators and establish a national strategic bitcoin reserve if he returns to the White House.

On Monday night, he live-streamed on the X social media app to launch the "World Free Finance" project, which is being hailed as a decentralized financial crypto project designed to compete with traditional banks.
