An ancient Bitcoin wallet was activated three hours ago after more than 13 years of “hibernation,” according to data from Whale Alert. The address contains 59 Bitcoins, worth about $3.8 million at press time.
The activation coincided with a sharp rally in Bitcoin, with the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization briefly touching $64,000 today for the first time since late August.
However, the wallet's reactivation does not appear to be due to a price surge, as there is no clear indication of a connection between wallet activations and price movements.
Whale Alert also noted that several Bitcoin wallets were activated this month after more than a decade of inactivity. For example, a wallet containing 43 BTC (worth more than $2.5 million at the time) emerged from “hibernation” for the first time in nearly 11 years.
Whale Alert recorded four similar wallets last week alone, one of which contained $10.5 million worth of Bitcoin at the time of activation.
Notably, this is the first time this month that a Bitcoin wallet that has been inactive for more than 13 years has been activated. Such old wallets, dating back to the time of Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto, are now rare.
In August, Whale Alert only recorded two wallets that had been inactive for more than 13 years. As reported by Bitcoin Magazine, one wallet was activated on August 30 with $1.3 million worth of Bitcoin, while another “woke up” on August 25 with $4.1 million worth of Bitcoin.
