Swiss investment fund Dfinity is partnering with Cambodia to apply decentralized computing technology to develop smart cities, opening up new prospects for this Southeast Asian country.

On September 19, at the Token2049 event, Dfinity and the Cambodian Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI). This agreement marks an important step in realizing the commitment of both parties to apply advanced technology to build smart and sustainable urban solutions in Cambodia.

Under the agreement, Dfinity will support Cambodia in developing smart urban infrastructure by leveraging its decentralized computing technology platform. Dfinity has previously participated in several pilot projects in Cambodia, including the United Nations Development Programme’s Digital Global Trust Certificate system.

Mr. Dominic Williams, founder and chief scientist of Dfinity, commented that Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) and Internet Computer technology will be key factors in the digital transformation process and the development of safe smart cities in Cambodia.

According to Mr. Williams, this technology helps eliminate dependence on centralized cloud services such as Amazon Web Services, thanks to hosting software directly on the chain, thereby enhancing security and minimizing risks from cyber attacks for smart urban applications.

In addition, Mr. Try Sophal, Director of MISTI, emphasized that integrating blockchain technology into national infrastructure will create a strong driving force for smart city initiatives and promote the development of the digital economy in Cambodia. MISTI aims to make Cambodia a regional leader in emerging technology, with support from international partners such as Dfinity.

Since 2019, Cambodia has launched a smart neighborhood project in Phnom Penh, but the progress is still unclear. The cooperation with Dfinity is expected to create new momentum for Cambodia's digital transformation process, contributing to realizing the country's goal of building a smart city.
