Microsoft and G42, a UAE-based AI company, have established two new AI centers in Abu Dhabi. The centers aim to promote responsible AI in the Middle East and the Global South. They will identify best practices, support AI projects for social causes, and strengthen the relationship between Microsoft and the UAE. G42’s partnership with Microsoft also includes measures to ensure compliance with US trade restrictions.
Standards and Best Practices for Using AI
Microsoft and United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based artificial intelligence (AI) company G42 announced on September 17 the establishment of two new centers in Abu Dhabi to advance their “shared responsible AI goals.”
The first center will identify, develop, and promote best practices and industry standards for the use of AI in the Middle East and the Global South. It is co-founded and funded by Microsoft and G42 and endorsed by the Abu Dhabi Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC). The second center, Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab in Abu Dhabi, will support AI projects that address important societal goals.
Brad Smith, Corporate Vice President and General Manager at Microsoft, sees the creation of these centers as a major milestone in our efforts to expand access to safe AI.
“Today’s steps add to the important progress Microsoft and the G42 are making to expand access to the responsible, safe, and secure use of AI. We are committed to taking additional steps with the G42 to advance the responsible use of AI for our customers and to strengthen the relationship not only between our two companies but also between our two countries,” said the Microsoft president.
Peng Xiao, CEO of G42, said his company’s partnership is helping to create “a framework for AI to serve all of humanity.” Xiao added that the two centers are helping to position Abu Dhabi as a global AI innovation hub that “prioritizes safety, trust, and collaboration.”
G42’s $1.5 billion partnership with Microsoft, which began in April, prohibits the UAE company from doing business with any entity listed on the U.S. government’s Consolidated Screening List, the statement said. To ensure compliance, Microsoft and G42’s compliance committees meet quarterly. In addition, the two groups conduct weekly progress reviews.
