Microsoft is establishing two AI centers in Abu Dhabi in partnership with G42, a UAE-based AI technology company. The centers will focus on developing standards for the responsible use of AI and supporting projects that address important societal goals.

Microsoft has announced the establishment of two artificial intelligence (AI) centers in Abu Dhabi, to advance its global AI expansion strategy. The initiative is a result of a partnership with G42, an AI-focused holding company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The announcement comes after Microsoft invested $1.5 billion in G42 to enhance the development and accessibility of AI technologies on a global scale.

The two centers are designed to advance the AI industry while addressing important societal needs. Microsoft’s decision to open centers in Abu Dhabi demonstrates the company’s commitment to the region’s growing technology ecosystem, especially in the area of AI development.

Setting standards for responsible AI and addressing societal challenges

The first center will be co-founded and co-funded by Microsoft and G42 and will focus on developing and promoting best practices and industry standards for the responsible use of AI in the Middle East and the global South.

The initiative is supported by the Abu Dhabi Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC), an organization tasked with formulating AI policy and promoting research in the UAE. AIATC was established by the UAE President in January to promote investment, research, and development of AI infrastructure in the region.

The second center will bring Microsoft's AI for Good lab to Abu Dhabi, supporting projects that address societal challenges such as health, education and public safety. The move is part of Microsoft's broader mission to use AI for social good, highlighting the potential of AI technology to solve real-world problems around the world.

Both centers will not only develop AI-based solutions but also contribute to shaping policies related to the use of AI, ensuring digital safety and integrating cybersecurity measures. These policies aim to protect AI models from attacks and ensure that AI applications are deployed safely and effectively.

Microsoft's Growing Global AI Investments

Microsoft’s AI ambitions are not limited to the UAE. Earlier this year, the tech giant made several major investments in AI infrastructure around the world. In February, Microsoft pledged to invest €3.2 billion ($3.44 billion) to expand its AI capabilities in Germany, focusing on developing infrastructure for AI applications. Shortly after, the company announced a $2 billion investment in Spain, aiming to build AI and cloud data centers to enhance the region’s technology infrastructure.

These moves are part of a global strategy to make AI more accessible and impactful. Microsoft’s AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman also confirmed long-term investments in the UK, indicating that AI development will continue to be a focus area for the company. Through these initiatives, Microsoft is positioning itself as a leader in accelerating the development of AI around the world.
