Former US President Donald Trump was shot at a golf course in Florida on Sunday. The FBI said the incident "appears to be an assassination attempt." Trump is currently safe and the suspect has been arrested.

The suspect shot! Thrilling moments at close range

U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire on a gunman approaching the course boundary at Trump Golf Links in West Palm Beach, Florida, just before 2 p.m., U.S. Secret Service agent Rafael Barros said at a press conference on Sunday. Trump was playing golf on the property at the time and was only 300 to 500 yards away from the gunman, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Suspect exposed, rifle left at scene

The suspect targeted by the Secret Service's shooting was Ryan Wesley Routh. According to news reports, the suspect has been arrested. But authorities have yet to confirm the direction in which the suspect fired, and it's unclear whether he actually fired the gun. After the gunshots were fired, Trump was immediately escorted to a safe location before his motorcade returned to Mar-a-Lago, his resort residence in Palm Beach.

Witnesses at the scene told police they saw "someone running out of the bushes" before fleeing into a black vehicle. Investigators found an AK-47 style rifle in the bushes, two backpacks filled with tiles and a GoPro camera attached to a fence. Witnesses photographed the license plate number of the suspect's vehicle, and police followed the clues to track the suspect's vehicle north and eventually stopped him on Interstate 95.

Trump responds: I am safe and will not give in

The Trump campaign immediately sent a fundraising email in response to the incident, emphasizing that Trump was safe. "There are gunshots all around me, but before the rumors spread, I want everyone to know as soon as possible: I am safe and sound!" the email read. "Nothing can stop me, I will never give in!"

The suspect responded calmly, and the police followed up the investigation

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said at a news conference that the suspect looked calm when he was stopped, did not show much emotion, and did not ask police why he was arrested. Police did not conduct a detailed search of the vehicle at the time, but the FBI is expected to obtain a search warrant to investigate further.

FBI investigates second assassination attempt

The FBI is leading the investigation. Jeffrey Veltri, special agent in charge of the Miami Field Office, said the FBI has devoted all its resources to investigating the attempted assassination. This appears to be the second assassination attempt on Trump in just over two months. On July 13, Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania and his ear was grazed by a bullet.

The White House pays close attention, and all walks of life condemn the violence

This incident will not change Trump's schedule for next week. According to sources, the White House stated that President Biden and Vice President Harris have been briefed on the incident and will continue to receive updates. Harris posted on social media: "Violence should have no place, and I am happy for Trump's safety."
