#Binance alert about malware that compromises bitcoin withdrawal. Unidentified hackers would be using different cryptocurrency applications to execute the attack.
Key facts:
💥The malware mainly affects Android applications.
💥The type of threat was labeled as “clipper malware”.
Binance issued an alert about a “global threat” from hackers. According to the exchange's security team, the attackers would be running malware capable of stealing cryptocurrencies through applications that were compromised.
«We have identified a global malware issue that is significantly affecting #Criptomonedas transactions by altering withdrawal addresses during the transaction process.»
This is a type of attack known as “clipper malware”. This malware is capable of intercepting data stored in a device's clipboard and changing it. It mainly targets cryptocurrency addresses like bitcoin. Meaning that when a user uses an infected app, copies and pastes a #bitcoin or other cryptocurrency address to make a withdrawal, the malware changes this information to the attacker's address.
As a result, the victim suffers an irreversible loss of their money when making the transaction to the malicious address if they don't notice the change before.
The Binance security team indicated that on August 27 they detected a spike in the activity of this malware, "which has caused significant financial losses for affected users."
They also point out that this type of malware is usually distributed through "unofficial" applications and add-ons, particularly through #Android apps and web add-ons. However, they indicate that #iOS users should be vigilant as well.
Always be vigilant.
