Danny Ryan, a prominent researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has announced that he will be leaving the Ethereum ecosystem, ending seven years of important contributions. Ryan said he wants to make room for new opportunities and personal priorities.

Personal choice, nothing to do with Ethereum
In a GitHub post published on Friday, Ryan explained that his departure was due to personal reasons and a desire to explore other ventures. He emphasized that this decision does not represent any problems with the Ethereum project, core development, or the broader cryptocurrency field.
“Serving as one of the helmsmen on this complex Ethereum ship is an immersive experience,” Ryan said. "While this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, I'm ready to let go of this role and make room for other things."
A message to researchers: Emphasizing the value of Ethereum
Ryan said: “Strive to achieve real value, rather than short-term gains, which many people are chasing. Ethereum, and what we can build on it, has profound intrinsic value to humanity. Focus your time and energy on Expanding on that core value rather than chasing numbers is how Ethereum succeeds, and in the long run the real value will be reflected in the numbers we deserve to be obsessed with.”
He told fellow Ethereum partners: “Be careful. Ethereum’s infancy is long past, and its adolescence is now behind it. As a young person, the world is full of complexity, false prophets, complex incentives, dead ends, and other Danger. Everyone has a slightly different idea of what Ethereum should be, and where it should go, but overall every decision you make adds up to all the other decisions you make to guide Ethereum through this critical period. Stay true to the good. Do your part to let Ethereum follow the serendipitous path it has nurtured since its birth.”
Looking back on the relationship with Ethereum
Looking back on his journey, Ryan shared how he first became involved in Ethereum as an outsider with no formal connection to the foundation. “I showed up as ‘someone on the internet,’ found doors open, found my place, and accomplished something,” Ryan recalls. His self-driven dedication highlights the inclusive and open nature of the Ethereum community, which values talent and drive over informal background.
Ryan's departure is not only a pivotal moment for him personally, but also opens a new chapter for the Ethereum Foundation, giving new voices and contributors the opportunity to rise. While Ryan has yet to reveal specific plans for the future, he said the decision to "take a breather" means that what follows will be a period of reflection and exploration.
