Chain News recently exclusively reported on Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs’ 7/11 announcement, inviting bids for “Decentralized Authentication and Authorization System Construction Project” to implement digital public construction projects with Decentralized Identifiers (DID) and Verifiable Credentials. Picture, that is, Digital Wallet. On September 2, it was announced that Chunghwa Telecom won the bid. Other participants include electronics company ASUS, telecommunications provider Taiwan Mobile, and the old exchange BitTool.

Taiwan's digital wallet was awarded by Chunghwa Telecom with a budget of 199.9 million

The bid information shows that the total budget is NT$199,966,400; this bid belongs to a business category that is sensitive or has national security (including information security) concerns and involves national security. Performance start and end dates: August 27, 2024 to December 15, 2025.

Giants compete for each other, and native crypto players fail to make the list

The tender announcement also includes the "selection order or overall score". Among the participating competitors, they include:

  • Asus, an electronics company that won a bid in 2019 to set up a Taiwan blockchain service platform and build Formosa Chain

  • Taiwan Mobile, a telecommunications company led by AppWorks founder Lin Zhichen, recently became the 26th VASP operator in Taiwan.

  • Taiwan Cryptocurrency Exchange OG – Cointo Group led by Zheng Guangtai

In the final selection order, they were: Chunghwa Telecom, ASUS, Taiwan Mobile, and BitTool. The reasons for failure were all because "the qualifications and specifications are in line with the bidding documents but are not the most favorable bidder or the most winning manufacturer." It is also a pity that Coin Trust, the company most native to the cryptocurrency circle, did not successfully win the bid.

As for what results Chunghwa Telecom will bring to DID, it is expected to be announced by the end of 2025.
