Elon Musk calls for reform of US government, outlines barriers to innovation

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk renewed his call for significant reform of the U.S. government in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, warning that without meaningful changes, the country's laws and regulations will get worse. The billionaire wrote:

Without significant government reform, laws and regulations will get worse year by year until every major endeavor, from high-speed rail between our cities to making life multi-planetary, becomes illegal.

His message underscored his long-standing concerns about wasteful government spending and excessive regulation, which he believes stifle innovation and growth.

Musk's post is consistent with his previous statements about the need for a government efficiency commission, a concept he proposed to former US President Donald Trump. The commission would audit federal agencies and recommend reforms.

Trump expressed approval of Musk's offer to help cut government spending, declaring: "Elon, because he's not too busy, has agreed to head that task force" during a speech at the Economic Club of New York.

According to Trump advisers, the commission’s first goal will be to root out fraud and improper payments within six months. Musk has repeatedly argued that current financial policies are unsustainable, stating:

At current levels of government spending, America is on the verge of bankruptcy.

He sees cutting wasteful spending as essential to curbing inflation. Additionally, Musk has called for reducing the number of regulations surrounding federal procurement, believing such reforms would “dramatically improve outcomes” and open up future growth opportunities.
