ETH developers are exploring the possibility of splitting the upcoming Petra hardfork into two separate events. If implemented, the first fork could occur as early as February 2023. The proposed first fork would primarily focus on incorporating enhancements currently under development in the devnet3 testing environment, including EIP 7251 (max eebs), EIP 7702 (EOA account code clean-up), and EIP 6110 (dev fee recipient). The second fork would address more significant changes, such as EOF and PeerDAS. The inclusion of additional EIPs, like increasing the blob size, is also being considered. The Petra hardfork aims to enhance the Ethereum protocol by reducing the required number of validators and alleviating communication layer strain through adjustments to staking limits. However, it has raised concerns about potential negative impacts on client and node operator diversity. A final decision on the proposed fork split is expected to be made at the next core developer meeting.
