An address linked to the hack of Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX has suddenly started moving millions of dollars in Ethereum (ETH), according to cybersecurity firm PeckShield.

According to PeckShield, the hacker transferred the accumulated ETH to Tornado Cash, a coin mixing service that facilitates anonymous transactions of digital assets.

“An address labeled as WazirX Exploiter transferred 2600.1 ETH (worth ~$6.5M USD) to Tornado Cash…”

The stolen ETH was part of the WazirX hack on July 18, which resulted in the theft of more than $230 million in digital assets.

Blockchain tracking company Lookonchain reported that the cryptocurrency exchange lost several digital assets in addition to ETH, including top stablecoin Tether (USDT), Layer 2 scaling solution Polygon (MATIC), metaverse gaming token Gala (GALA), and memocoins Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Pepe (PEPE). Lookonchain also noted in July that the hacker was in the process of dumping the tokens and had already sold the stolen SHIB and PEPE holdings.

Last month, the exchange announced that it was canceling all trades and restoring customer balances following the hack.

“All users’ portfolio balances on the WazirX platform will be restored to the levels they were on 18 July 2024, 1:00 PM IST… Affected users will receive an email notifying them of any affected trades.”

According to crypto detective ZachXBT, the hack appears to be linked to the infamous North Korean crypto hacking organization The Lazarus Group.
