The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has launched the Bakong Tourists app, expanding payment options via the Bakong blockchain system. The app works with China's UnionPay and in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

- Cambodia has only 55,000 PoS systems and 5,600 ATMs for its 16.8 million population. Bakong enables QR payments at 3.3 million locations.

- Bakong Tourists allows sending/receiving money, topping up bank accounts, tracking transactions, and converting currencies. Spending limit of $500/day, which can be increased to $3,000 after KYC.

- Download the app from Google/Apple Store, register via email, and top up via partners such as banks, hotels, and travel agencies.

- NBC plans to partner with international payment companies to link Bakong accounts to international payment cards. The deals with Malaysia and South Korea will be done in August and September.

Bakong, launched in 2020 with Japan’s Soramitsu, is a model for Laos’ CBDC and a regional payment system that includes India, China, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.
