According to PANews, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced that Meta Platforms Ireland Limited was fined 251 million euros for violations in the 2018 data breach. The breach affected approximately 29 million Facebook accounts, of which 3 million were from the EU/EEA, and the leaked information included names, emails, phone numbers, etc.
The DPC investigation found that Meta did not fully fulfill its data breach notification obligations and was fined 11 million euros; it failed to ensure the principle of data protection in the design of data processing systems and was fined 240 million euros. The Deputy Commissioner of the DPC pointed out that failure to implement data protection requirements can lead to serious risks and damages. The full decision will be released later.
