According to ChainCatcher, Cash App decided to terminate the Bitcoin transfer function through user tags months after the US federal government launched an investigation into Block's compliance practices.
Cash App announced on its help page that sending and receiving Bitcoin between $cashtags will no longer be supported starting December 20, 2024. Users can still transfer money using the Lightning Network or the Bitcoin blockchain.
A check of the Wayback Machine in October showed no such notification. The change affects only bitcoin transfers, not other services such as sending stocks or cash via cashtags.
