Celestia, a layer-1 data accessibility network, is poised to surpass Ethereum and become the number one in on-chain data storage. According to Blockworks Research, Celestia has increased its market share from 20% to 40% since May.
Launching in 2023, Celestia is described as “a modular data accessibility network that makes it easy to launch your own blockchain securely.” This feature puts Celestia in direct competition with Ethereum.
Ethereum's Dencun upgrade in March introduced temporary data stores called "blobs" that aim to reduce data storage costs. However, according to Figment's report, storing data on Celestia is generally cheaper.
Besides Celestia, other protocols such as EigenLayer and Avail are also competing in the data availability space. According to Blockworks' Dan Smith, even if Ethereum loses its lead in data storage, it will remain the main settlement layer of Web3.
