Crypto-Related Deaths

This sad incident serves as an unsettling reminder that the crypto space has seen some unexplained and violent deaths. Billionaire Matthew Mellon passed suddenly in 2018 under claims he had been killed for his large cryptocurrency holdings. Still, these assertions are speculative and connected to his reported drug problems.

Similarly, in 2022, a crypto millionaire’s dismembered body was found in a suitcase in Argentina, and another individual was brutally killed and had their remains disposed of through a drain in Bulgaria.

The brutal murder of the Bitcoiner in Kyiv underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness within the crypto community. Jameson Lopp, a prominent Bitcoin cypherpunk, explains that criminals frequently identify potential victims through social media posts, public conversations, meetups, and conferences. He advises against engaging in peer-to-peer trades with strangers, flaunting wealth on social media, and wearing crypto-branded clothing in public.
