In discussing these personal and subjective questions, we must not lose sight of the tremendous power of history. Globally, the impact of the epidemic has led to a global mental health crisis. China and South Korea are two of the fastest-growing societies in East Asia, but ultra-fast growth can lead to deeply unhappy outcomes, as the experience of South Korea foretells. In South Korea, people are unhappy, the birth rate is freezing, and men and women are alienated from each other. Whereas in Europe, you don't feel much from their policies, but it's much easier to live there. A lot of people are talking about happiness economics and happiness policies, but to me, turning happiness into an index and then trying to chase it is the wrong direction of effort.
