The result? Click the link, and instead of bagging a shiny new NFT, the hacker was busy emptying out their wallets. Ouch.
People on Crypto Twitter didn't sit idle though. They were super quick to spot and flag the fake link. But, the first hint that Buterin might've been hacked came from an unexpected source - his dad, Dmitriy "Dima" Buterin. 👀
In a tweet, he alerted everyone:
🔴 "Disregard this post, apparently Vitalik has been hacked. He is working on restoring access."
Though the tweet was deleted, for many, the damage was already done. Victims were left watching their funds disappear, and in just an hour, the hacker's bag grew from $147,000 to a staggering $691,000. And if you're wondering about the specifics, big shoutout to blockchain detective @ZachXBT for the intel. 👏
But wait, there's more. The hacker, in a rather cheeky move, decided to send one of the stolen NFTs right back to Buterin. Talk about audacity! 😲
Binance's CEO, Changpeng Zhao, pointed fingers at Twitter's not-so-stellar security.
🔴 “It needs quite a bit more features: 2FA, login ID should be different from handle or email, etc.”
Two-factor authentication, a safety measure that's become the gold standard, is, surprisingly, only available to Twitter Blue subscribers. Time for a rethink, Twitter?
