Lightning Network is a layer 2 payment solution built on the Bitcoin blockchain, proposed as a solution to expand its ability to become an efficient payment method. Analytics show that the Lightning Network not only supports fast but also low-cost transactions, with the average fee rate gradually decreasing since November 2021.

James Check, Glassnode's analytics tool, shows that the average fee to transfer 1 Bitcoin (BTC) via Lightning Network is 3,000 Satoshi (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) - "equivalent to 0.84 USD to send money worth 28,800 USD".

Traditional payment networks like Visa and Mastercard are charging 2-3% per transaction, which is considered quite expensive for businesses. Some business owners who choose Bitcoin as a payment method share that international transactions through Visa and Mastercard increase transaction costs by 8%.

Analysis from Glassnode also mentions users running private nodes as they can take advantage of custodial wallets like Wallet of Satoshi and Alby to make small payments on social media apps like Nostr.

However, Lightning Network's throughput still makes many companies afraid.

Glassnode's Check believes that regular channels smaller than 1 BTC must still be considered. The average channel size is 0.02 BTC and the median value is 0.08 BTC. So overall the Lightning Network is still suitable for payments under $1,000.

In the chart below, the channel size is trending higher but still within the limit of less than 10,000 USD. In this case, payments above $1,000 may be better suited to the Bitcoin base chain to avoid instances of failed payments or mistaken transactions.
