Binance Donates $100,000 to Turkish Non-Profit Ahbap for Earthquake Recovery Efforts

2023-11-08

8 November 2023 – Istanbul, Türkiye – Binance, the world’s leading blockchain and cryptocurrency infrastructure provider, announced today a donation of $100,000 in cryptocurrency to Ahbap, a well-respected non-profit organization in Turkey. The donation will be utilized directly to construct earthquake-resistant steel homes for affected families, and underscores Binance’s desire to contribute to ongoing earthquake recovery efforts in the country.

Ahbap, founded in July 2017 by famous Turkish rock musician Haluk Levent, is widely known and well-regarded within Turkey for its diverse relief and recovery initiatives across the country. Following the severe earthquakes which hit the country earlier this year, Ahbap has been working tirelessly in collaboration with other NGOs to provide aid and support in the affected areas. One of the organization’s main initiatives involves the building of earthquake-resistant steel homes, with the aim of helping families in the aftermath of the disaster through safe shelter. Education is another key

Mucahit Donmez, General Manager of Binance TR, shared: “Recovery and rebuilding initiatives are key to helping the community and its economy bounce back after experiencing a debilitating natural disaster. Significant amounts of time, effort, and resources are required. By partnering with Ahbap, Binance wants to do our part to help and provide practical support to those who need it.”

Haluk Levent, Founder of Ahbap, shared: “Having a safe shelter is extremely important for affected families as it helps them to gradually gain back normalcy, stability, and independence into their lives. Binance’s donation today will greatly support Ahbap’s efforts and allow us to benefit more families. It is also evidence of how crypto can be harnessed for good, and I am grateful to Binance for being a shining testament of blockchain’s transformative power.”

“In addition to home rebuilding efforts, education is another key priority for Abhap. To date, we have enabled 16 schools in the earthquake zone through donations. By helping to get children back to school as soon as possible, we hope that families feel more assured and supported in efforts to rebuild their lives,”  added Haluk Levent.

This donation is part of broader efforts by Binance to use blockchain during relief and recovery efforts. Previously, in response to the earthquake in Turkey, Binance provided direct financial aid to affected Turkish users through an airdrop worth $100 of BNB each. Binance also launched an Earthquake Emergency Appeal, where 100% of crypto donations received went into providing emergency supplies with the help of NGOs. Together, Binance, its partners and the wider crypto community have been able to harness crypto for good during and in the aftermath of crises.
