According to the latest report from Crystal Intelligence published in mid-June, 19 billion dollars have been stolen over the last 13 years in the cryptocurrency industry, or around 1.5 billion per year, and therefore a little more than 4 million per day. It all started on June 19, 2011 when the first cryptocurrency hack was reported and since then things have been going from bad to worse! Hacks have unfortunately become commonplace in our ecosystem and we will see that the years 2022 and 2023 hold the prize for the amounts stolen even if 2024 also seems to be off to a very good start. Diving into the figures of this revolting and annoying facet of the cryptosphere which can sometimes frighten beginners, but which must above all encourage the greatest caution.

With 2021 and 2022 marked by an explosive bull run that is greatly increasing the value of many cryptocurrencies, this is the time that hackers will choose to take action and steal the largest amounts of crypto assets. 2022 is thus “the deadliest year in terms of value” according to Crystal Intelligence, with $4.2 billion stolen in 199 thefts, while 2023 was the year with the highest number of hacks with 286 criminal operations recorded, for a value of $2.3 billion. The hackers have therefore increased the number of thefts for a ultimately less significant loot as can be seen on the graphs. The one presented below clearly shows us that the number of thefts and/or scams has been constantly increasing since 2016 with a real explosion of cases between 2021 and 2022 which have more than doubled. But the one above illustrates at the same time a drop in the amounts stolen which will therefore have had its peak in 2022.
