Kabosu (originally meaning "stinky orange") is well known to netizens because of a photo of it that was accidentally taken, which became a famous meme in 2013. After the photo was accompanied by text, it became popular at the end of 2013 and was selected as the "top meme" of the year by the website "Know Your Meme". In December 2013, the Doge-themed cryptocurrency Dogecoin was also launched at the same time. When the meme became popular, Kabosu was named "Doge", which later became its second name.
