Polygon, a popular Ethereum scaling solution, has recently unveiled its Polygon 2.0 roadmap, which includes a proposed technical upgrade for its native MATIC token. If approved by the community, this upgrade will transform MATIC into Polygon (POL), a versatile token capable of validating multiple chains within the Polygon ecosystem. The move aims to address scalability concerns while maintaining a high level of security.
The planned POL token is designed to function seamlessly across all Polygon protocols, including Proof of Stake (PoS), zkEVM, and Supernets. The main objective of this upgrade is to enable the ecosystem to scale efficiently, accommodating thousands of Polygon chains without compromising the overall security. In the official announcement, the Polygon team shared their vision for the upgrade:
“Primarily, it enables the pool of protocol participants, i.e., actors, to scale to support thousands of Polygon chains without sacrificing security.”
The utility of POL will primarily revolve around validators, incentivizing them to carry out valuable work. If the upgrade proposal is accepted, the redesigned protocol architecture will introduce several new features, such as infinite scalability and frictionless communication between different protocols.
For validators, staking POL tokens will unlock three different incentive streams: protocol rewards, transaction fees, and additional rewards. In addition to validating multiple chains, validators will have the flexibility to perform various roles within a single chain, including generating zero-knowledge proofs and participating in DACs (Data Availability Committees).
The transition from MATIC to POL is expected to be a straightforward process. Token holders will be required to send their MATIC tokens to a designated smart contract, which will then distribute an equivalent number of POL tokens in return. To ensure a smooth transition, Polygon has proposed a generous grace period of at least four years, allowing token holders ample time to complete the upgrade process and adjust to the new token.
It is important to note that the proposed upgrade is subject to approval from the Polygon community. If the community endorses the migration to POL, the transition could begin within a few months, depending on the consensus reached. Polygon is well-known for its commitment to community engagement and transparency, and as such, the decision-making process will involve active participation and feedback from its members.
