Former US President Donald Trump and the leading Republican candidate for the November election said he is “fun” with cryptocurrency but does not trade it.
“It's taking on a life of its own. Sometimes I do little things for fun, make money and have fun with it,” Trump said in an interview on CNBC this morning when asked about his thoughts on cryptocurrency.
Trump went on to say that he sometimes allows people to pay him in Bitcoin, adding that it is “an additional form of currency.”
The presidential candidate appears to be softening his stance on Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market. Previously, Trump claimed that “it looks like a scam” in 2021.
His latest comments also echo comments at a town hall event on Fox News in February, where Trump said that, despite facing some regulation, many people are embracing Bitcoin and he could “live with it one way or another”.
Trump has consistently emphasized the importance of the USD, but cryptocurrency and its related markets seem to increasingly attract his attention.
“I did something that people thought was funny and crazy. We have produced 1000 pairs of limited edition sneakers and users can use our crazy new currencies to buy them,” he said referring to his sneaker collection.
“The last pair sold for $450,000. It was successful and I noticed that a lot of it was paid for in the new currency,” Trump said.
“Cryptocurrency has been used a lot and I'm not sure if I want to get involved at this point.”
Donald Trump is changing his stance on cryptocurrencies
As President in 2019, Trump criticized Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.
“I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, they are not money and have very volatile values.”
However, Trump has since continued to promote his own NFTs, including a trading card collection in December 2022 and a “Mugshot Edition” last December.
Blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence said the cryptocurrency portfolio it believes is owned by Trump sold 1,075 ETH, worth about $2.4 million at the time.
