Today, OpenAI has begun rolling out its newest AI language model GPT-4 to API users. In the gradual introduction of GPT-4, OpenAI has decided to prioritize API access to developers who offer exceptional model evaluations to OpenAI Evals. The aim is to gain insights into how to enhance the model for the benefit of all users.
The GPT-4 API is not yet publicly available, and developers can sign up for a waitlist to access the API on a rate-limited basis. The waitlist will enable OpenAI to balance the system’s capacity with the demand from developers. OpenAI has also started inviting some developers to join the waitlist and will gradually increase the API availability.
OpenAI has introduced a Priority Access program, where developers who contribute model evaluations to OpenAI Evals can get prioritized API access to the language model. By contributing to OpenAI Evals, developers will help improve the GPT-4 model for everyone, and in return, they will receive priority access to the API.
The company has also announced that ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to access GPT-4 with a dynamically adjusted usage cap. However, due to capacity constraints, the usage cap will depend on demand and system performance. Even for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, API access will still be through the waitlist.
OpenAI’s upcoming API models, GPT-4 and GPT-4-32k, will be priced according to their context window size and token volume. GPT-4 with an 8K window will cost $0.03 per 1K prompt tokens and $0.06 per 1K completion tokens. GPT-4-32k with a 32K window will cost $0.06 per 1K prompt tokens and $0.12 per 1K completion tokens.
Overall, the introduction of GPT-4 and the availability of its API on a waitlist basis is a significant development in the field.
