In the early 90s, he moved to Canada and then to the United States, where he attended the University of Pennsylvania. In 1995, together with his brother, he founded the company Zip2, which was an Internet service for newspapers. This company was sold in 1999 to Compaq Computers.

The following year, Musk founded X.com, an online payment services company that later became known as PayPal. In 2002, eBay bought PayPal for $1.5 billion.
