On October 1, he was elected as Japan's 102nd Prime Minister and made headlines by dissolving the House of Representatives just eight days into his term, setting a post-war record for the fastest dissolution after a prime minister's election. On October 27, the new House of Representatives election took place, where the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito failed to secure a majority of seats. According to Japan's constitution, a special session of the National Diet must be convened within 30 days following a House of Representatives election to conduct the prime ministerial nomination election.
