According to Blockworks, Gurbir Grewal, director of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Enforcement Division, will leave this month. Current deputy director Sanjay Wadhwa will serve as acting director starting October 11.
Grewal, who has held the position since July 2021, said he was proud of his accomplishments during his tenure and thanked Chairman Gary Gensler for his support. Gensler also praised Grewal’s contributions to protecting investors and ensuring compliance in the market.
Under Grewal’s leadership, the SEC issued 35 cryptocurrency enforcement actions in 2022 and a total of 40 in 2023. The Enforcement Division nearly doubled the size of its Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit in May 2022, bringing the team’s total headcount to 50 people.
Wadhwa has worked at the SEC since 2003, serving as a senior deputy director in the New York Enforcement Division and as a deputy director throughout the division for eight years.
