Recently, BNB Chain announced a groundbreaking announcement for opBNB, detailing its strategic roadmap for the coming quarters. These upgrades are designed to improve platform performance and user engagement, putting opBNB on an ambitious path to becoming an increasingly scalable Layer 2 (L2) solution.

Design principles of opBNB

It can be simplified into three goals:

High performance and low cost: The core of opBNB's design philosophy is its commitment to high performance and low cost. opBNB's roadmap prioritizes scalability, transaction efficiency, and network responsiveness, paving the way for a thriving ecosystem of decentralized applications (dApps) and maintaining its core value of extremely low costs. The goal is to achieve 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) while reducing transaction costs to one-tenth of the current level, or $0.0005 per transfer transaction. The first fee reduction is scheduled for December 4, from $0.005 to $0.001.

AppChain Architecture: opBNB’s introduction of the AppChain architecture is a strategic move to seamlessly deploy multiple application-specific Layer 2 solutions. The architecture is designed to enhance opBNB’s connectivity and provide a powerful framework for the growing dApps space.

Community Collaboration: An active and engaged community is at the heart of opBNB. The roadmap emphasizes fostering a collaborative community that actively participates in the development, governance, and overall growth of the platform.

opBNB’s enabling functions

Improve performance

opBNB will improve performance by increasing its capacity from 100M per second to 200M per second. This improvement positions opBNB as the highest capacity Layer 2 solution on the market. In addition, this increased capacity enables opBNB to support on-chain gaming and high-frequency DeFi transactions at a speed of 10,000 transactions per second.

Generally, TPS, as a key indicator, reflects the speed and efficiency of the blockchain network. A higher TPS usually means that the blockchain has the ability to process more transactions, faster and smoother.

Cost-effective - 10 times lower cost

opBNB's data availability layer design, implemented on BNB Smart Chain (BSC) via EIP4844 and BNB Greenfield, aims to reduce transaction costs to one-tenth of the current level. Unlike the current expensive CALLDATA method of including batched transactions inside blockchain blocks, this new system operates as a sidecar outside of BSC blocks on BNB Greenfield. This approach significantly reduces costs by avoiding permanent on-chain data storage, improves efficiency, and reduces overall fees.

Security and Scalability

opBNB is committed to adopting multiple proofs in the OP Stack solution: including fraud proofs or Zk proofs. Providing more adaptable and secure proofs for optimistic rollups, opBNB is pushed to Stage 1 Rollup on BSC. To reach Stage 1 Rollup status, an L2 must meet specific requirements.

Introducing various node types

opBNB will have different types of nodes to meet the needs of various users and applications. opBNB will provide:

Archive Nodes - Store the complete blockchain history.

Full Node - Keeps the latest blockchain status.

Fast nodes - enabling users to participate without the need for powerful hardware or the high bandwidth that full nodes typically require.

AppChain architecture based on opBNB stack

opBNB will build an App Chain architecture that can easily deploy various application-specific Layer 2 solutions and seamlessly connect them. This approach enables BSC to scale and meet the needs of large-scale applications.

All Layer 2 chains in this architecture share decentralized governance, upgrades, technology stack, and communication layer (bridge) with Layer 1, promoting a close-knit ecosystem.
