Bitcoin Investor Convicted of Not Paying Crypto Taxes Ordered to Disclose $124 Million in BTC Access Codes
Frank Richard Algren III, who was convicted of not paying crypto taxes, has been ordered to disclose access codes to $124 million worth of cryptocurrencies, Bloomberg reported, citing a court statement.
According to the journalists, the defendant, who owes the state about $1 million due to non-payment of taxes, must hand over access codes to digital assets, identify all devices used to store them, and disclose his cryptocurrency accounts.
In December 2024, prosecutors asked a judge to force Algren to provide information about where at least 1,287 BTC (about $124 million at the time of the announcement), which he moved in 2020 using a crypto mixer, are stored.
Algren was sentenced to two years in prison for evading capital gains taxes on cryptocurrencies. He filed false tax returns in which he “underreported or failed to report” the sale of $3.7 million worth of bitcoin.
Prosecutors then said the defendant’s property “cannot be seized by ordinary physical means.”
