👁️Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposes a global "soft pause button" to slow down the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI)
Recently, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed a controversial proposal: to set up a "soft pause button" worldwide to slow down the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) to ensure that humans have enough time to prepare and adapt.
In his article on the d/acc concept, Vitalik Buterin proposed that through this "soft pause button", the global available computing power will be reduced by about 90%-99% at critical moments for 1-2 years to buy more preparation time for humans.
The proposal has sparked heated discussions in the community. Some users strongly opposed this view, believing that it is a naive proposal to suspend 90%-99% of the global computing power for 1-2 years without military force to enforce it, and the chances of a gentle deceleration are slim.
In response to the criticism, Vitalik said that he agreed that this was a difficult task, but almost all proposals to deal with strong artificial intelligence are difficult to some extent. He argues that this proposal is less arduous than other pause ideas because it is enforced at the hardware level, key decisions are made before the high-risk period begins, and "betrayal" requires manufacturing new hardware rather than just flipping a few switches in secret, which takes months of preparation.
What do you think of this proposal by Vitalik Buterin? Do you think a global "soft pause button" is feasible, or is there a better way to ensure the safe and controlled development of AGI?
