5 January 2025
January 2025 will be an interesting month for the crypto sector. Many major developments are anticipated, including the inauguration of Donald Trump as US President on January 20.
Not only that, the change of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman from Gary Gensler to Paul Atkins is also scheduled on the same day. This change is expected to have a significant impact on the crypto market, especially for several altcoins that have great potential.
Here are four altcoins that should be on your radar this month, based on analysis from Altcoin Buzz.
4 Potential Altcoins in January 2025
1. Solana (SUN)
Solana, one of the leading bluechip projects, will be in the spotlight in January. On January 23, the SEC is scheduled to issue a preliminary ruling on Grayscale’s proposed conversion of its Solana Trust Fund into a Solana ETF.
Not only that, on January 25, four other big players, namely VanEck, 21Shares, Canary, and Bitwise, will face the initial approval stage from the SEC for their Solana ETFs.
While an immediate decision is not certain, a change in leadership at the SEC could provide new direction for the market.
“With the new SEC Chair Paul Atkins on board, the Solana ETF filing review process could open up some big opportunities for the project,” said Maddie, host of Altcoin Buzz.
However, there is a small risk that Gary Gensler decides to reject the filing as his final act before stepping down. If that happens, market participants will have to wait for the filing to be resubmitted.
2. Ondo Finance (ONDO)
Ondo Finance is a leader in the real-world assets (RWA) sector. This altcoin is interesting because of its involvement with the new DeFi platform, World Liberty Financial (WLFI).
The platform, which is backed by President Trump, purchased $250,000 worth of ONDO tokens last December.
Additionally, Ondo Finance will undergo a major token unlock on January 18, totaling 1.94 billion ONDO tokens. While unlock events typically cause price drops, this could be a buying opportunity for investors looking to capitalize on its long-term potential.
“Token unlocks can be a pivotal moment to consider buying at a low price,” Maddie added.
3. On (ON)
Sui has seen tremendous growth in the DeFi space. The total value locked (TVL) on the platform has reached $1.6 billion in a short period of time. The Sui ecosystem continues to grow with the launch of Deepbook’s DE token in October and Sui Naming Service (SNS) in November.
Sui also ventured into the gaming sector with the launch of the first handheld Web3 device, the SuiPlay 0x1. With easier global access through USDC and Coinbase integration, Sui offers a huge opportunity in the crypto market.
4. Sonic (S)
Sonic, formerly known as Fantom, has undergone a rebranding and offers a number of significant improvements, including 10,000 TPS transaction speeds and sub-second finality.
Sonic will also get a big boost with its listing on Binance on January 16, which will almost certainly trigger a surge in the price of the S token.
“Listing on Binance is always a positive catalyst for new tokens, and Sonic will be no different,” said Maddie.
Meanwhile, Sonic is also planning an airdrop for users who have participated in their previous programs, although registration for the qualifiers has closed.
January 2025 will be a month full of opportunities for crypto investors. With significant developments including ETF decisions, token unlocks and Binance listings, the above four altcoins are worth considering.
As always, do thorough research before making any investment or DYOR decisions. [Tr]
