HODL is a slang term in the crypto community that means “holding” assets and not selling them despite market fluctuations.
The term originally originated as a typo of the word HOLD in a post on the BitcoinTalk forum in 2013. A user named GameKyuubi wrote:
“I AM HODLING” instead of “I am holding”, explaining that he intends to hold his bitcoins despite their price drop.
Since then, HODL has become a popular meme and strategy for cryptocurrency investors, denoting long-term asset holding with belief in their future growth, regardless of current market volatility.
This can also be interpreted as an abbreviation:
HODL — Hold On for Dear Life.
