In October, we celebrated the fourth anniversary of the Filecoin mainnet launch. It has been an incredible four years; today, the Filecoin network includes hundreds of teams worldwide and thousands of storage providers, making Filecoin the largest decentralized file storage network in the world.
As the Filecoin Foundation (FF) looks towards 2025, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the Filecoin Foundation's vision and strategic focuses. In 2025, FF's primary goal is to mobilize the community to ensure Filecoin operates seamlessly and finds product-market fit.
FF's vision and role in the ecosystem
The mission of the Filecoin Foundation is to protect humanity's most important information by promoting open-source governance of the Filecoin network, funding research and development projects related to Filecoin and decentralized technologies, and supporting the development of the Filecoin ecosystem and community. FF's vision is to create a world where Filecoin and related decentralized technologies preserve and protect humanity's most important information, empower users, and embed core civil liberties and human rights (such as freedom of speech and privacy) into the structure of the world's technological infrastructure. We aim to build a decentralized, efficient, and powerful foundation for the future of the Web.
The Filecoin ecosystem is fully decentralized, which means FF does not lead or determine the direction of the Filecoin ecosystem. Instead, like other open-source governance bodies, FF's goal is to gather and empower the Filecoin community—including storage providers, data clients, token holders, developers, and other ecosystem participants. This includes facilitating open-source governance processes for the Filecoin network, providing funding for team building within the ecosystem, hosting events to convene ecosystem participants, and supporting the Filecoin community in other ways.
FF's primary goal for 2025 is to ensure that Filecoin operates seamlessly and finds product-market fit—but FF cannot dictate how the Filecoin community should achieve these goals. Instead, FF 2025's strategic focus is to unify the community to achieve these goals—including facilitating a process for the community to reach consensus on the most important actions, ensuring Filecoin operates seamlessly and finding product-market fit, supporting projects that contribute to these goals, and shifting towards playing a larger role in convening the Filecoin ecosystem to have the right people discussing the right things at the right time.

To achieve a seamless operation of Filecoin and find product-market fit, FF outlines the following strategic focuses that will be priorities for FF in 2025:

Shift from a 'launch' culture to an 'iteration' culture that emphasizes quality, refinement, and stability. Support open-source data import tools with an emphasis on stability. Keep the community active through high-profile, high-quality integrations and collaborations (including platform integrations and AI collaborations). Support storage providers in finding profitable business models and facilitating paid storage transactions, including through supporting transaction channels. Significantly increase on-chain activity. Shift towards allowing FF to play a larger coordinating and convening role throughout the ecosystem, enabling the right people to discuss the right things at the right time. Shift towards FF playing a larger role in coordinating communication among ecosystem participants around the scope of the ecosystem.
FF cannot achieve the goal of ensuring Filecoin operates seamlessly and finding product-market fit alone; instead, our strategic focus is on uniting the Filecoin community and supporting the community in achieving these goals together.

To measure the ecosystem's progress in achieving our primary goals for 2025 (ensuring Filecoin operates seamlessly and finding product-market fit), FF has developed a set of new ecosystem-focused 2025 objectives and key results (OKRs).
We hope that by setting ambitious, clear, and measurable goals, we can track the ecosystem's progress, identify and address obstacles, determine areas for improvement, and celebrate the ecosystem's successes in the process.
