Buterin Donates $170,000 to Tornado Cash Developers' Legal Fund

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has donated 50 Ethereum (ETH) worth about $170,000 to the legal defense fund for Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev on Tuesday.

Storm said Buterin's contribution represents about 25% of the $650,000 available to Tornado Cash developers through JusticeDAO ahead of the trial.

Meanwhile, Storm and his co-developer Roman Semenov are also facing money laundering and sanctions violation charges related to their roles at Tornado Cash.

The allegations against the Tornado Cash developers largely came after the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added the mixer to its Specially Designated Individuals list in August 2022.

The move has sparked outrage among the crypto community, who see it as a threat to software freedom and innovation in the cryptocurrency industry.
