Crypto scammers scammed the French out of €500 million
Most of the scams targeted crypto investors, with some scammers telling people their projects were backed by celebrities, while others masqueraded as well-known investment platforms, officials said.
“The creators of dubious crypto schemes create fake videos and articles using artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake, posing as famous people. The so-called celebrities then convince people that they have made a fortune by trading crypto assets, which turns out to be a real scam,” the AMF said.
The agency said that since 2022, the AMF and the French Prudential Supervision Authority have blacklisted almost 5,000 services operating illegally in the country. The authorities also blocked nearly 350 fraudulent websites.
In November 2023, the AMF conducted a survey, according to which 9% of the French own cryptocurrencies. #BtcNewHolder
