In 2013, the first wave of altcoins increased their value in the total crypto market capitalization. 2015 saw the birth of Ethereum and its ether — Bitcoin’s closest rival — and then, in 2017, the ICO boom led to BTC dominance falling further and hitting an all-time low, only to recover above 50% in a few months. Today, BTC dominance faces stiff competition from DeFi projects, NFTs, metaverse tokens, and over 20,000 non-bitcoin cryptocurrencies.
