What will happen to D.O.G.E then? Donald Trump and Elon Musk seem to be heading for a breakup, and this is not the split anyone expected. You see, even before he officially returns to the Oval, the president is already facing whispers that Elon has more influence over his presidency than anyone should. If they go their separate ways next year, the fate of their ambitious project, the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E), will be thrown into chaos. "Let’s clarify one thing," Trump allegedly said on stage in Phoenix during the AmericaFest Turning Point USA conference. "No, he will not be president, I can tell you that. And I’m safe. You know why he can’t be? He wasn’t born in this country." The crowd reacted enthusiastically, chanting Trump’s name as smoke and fireworks illuminated the stage. Trump stood in his signature red tie, enjoying the attention. Tensions are rising as Elon overshadows Trump. The partnership between the billionaire tech mogul and the president began with grand promises but is starting to resemble a ticking time bomb. Elon is not shy about making changes. Last week, he helped derail emergency spending measures in Congress, an act that made headlines and left Democrats and even some Republicans furious. Elon’s unpredictable nature, combined with his growing political influence, has started to rub Trump the wrong way. Insiders say Trump is tired of Elon’s rising profile and doesn't appreciate the shadow he casts over his administration. Cracks began to appear when Elon’s involvement in D.O.G.E started attracting more attention, especially as he seeks to cut funding for organizations like the IRS and the Federal Reserve. The mission of D.O.G.E is to cut $2 trillion in unnecessary spending by downsizing bloated agencies and eliminating useless regulations. Elon and Vivek Ramaswamy were chosen by Trump to lead this campaign, but Elon’s star is overshadowing the president in ways he clearly doesn’t like. "He’s not running the country. Ever," Trump stated, dispelling rumors that Elon might even want to run for office. "The Constitution says you have to be born here. He wasn’t born. End of story." What will happen to D.O.G.E without Elon? For starters, D.O.G.E lacks official Congressional approval, which means it operates more like a high-profile advisory group than an actual federal department. The goal to save $2 trillion by July 4, 2026 — the 250th anniversary of America’s independence — sounds good on paper, but without Elon’s leadership, the chances of achieving it dramatically decrease. His reputation as an innovator and ability to disrupt entire industries are the qualities on which this project relies. Losing him would deprive D.O.G.E of its most powerful asset. Vivek, although a capable entrepreneur in his own right, does not have the same influence. The U.S. federal budget is $6.5 trillion a year, and the Trump administration promised to find huge savings by scrutinizing every line item. Critics have already pointed out that such measures could lead to layoffs, disrupt public services, and create chaos in government operations. Without Elon, even these shaky plans could completely collapse. But the fallout from the breakup between Trump and Elon will extend far beyond D.O.G.E. Trump supporters have seen Elon as part of the team, viewing their partnership as a powerful alliance against the entrenched bureaucracy of Washington. If Elon leaves, some of Trump’s base (especially the tech-savvy young people and wealthy donors who admire Elon’s vision) may follow him. On the other hand, severing ties with Elon could help Trump regain control over his own narrative. But the risks are real. The Republican Party is already showing signs of internal division. Republicans in the House are becoming increasingly unruly, with some openly ignoring Trump’s directives. Losing Elon could ignite these factions, making it even harder for Trump to maintain control over the party and push his agenda. It could also open the door for new Republican leaders who are less tied to Trump’s populist style and more inclined toward old-fashioned conservative values.
