Another development regarding the largest financial pyramid in Brazil. This time, three police officers and a police chief were arrested. They are accused of facilitating illegal operations of the scheme that moved R$38 billion. Authorities estimate that 300,000 victims of Glaidson Acácio dos Santos, who became known as the Bitcoin Pharaoh.
In addition to losing her position, delegate Daniela dos Santos Rebelo Pinto and police officers Roberto Nogueira Alves, Marcelo Meireles Pinto and Raphael Vasques Jorge Macedo, were each sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) obtained the conviction of the accused, through a complaint via Operation New Egypt. In fact, it is an offshoot of Operation Kryptos, responsible for the arrest of the “Bitcoin Pharaoh” in 2021.
Police officers facilitated fraud and received bribes
Based on telematic interceptions, financial records and testimonies, the MPRJ proved the defendants' participation in crimes such as criminal organization, fraudulent management and passive corruption, resulting in the judicial recognition of the charges.
Daniela dos Santos, for example, received a bribe from Glaidson to facilitate the coup. Meanwhile, the civil police officers assisted in the organization's illegal operations. The accused ironically worked at the Fraud Division (DDEF).
But after all, who is the Pharaoh of Bitcoins?
Until 2014, Glaidson Acácio dos Santos was a waiter in Búzios, earning just over R$800. In just seven years, he became a millionaire, moving more than R$2 billion with GAS Consultoria Bitcoin, a company accused of operating a pyramid scheme. In fact, Glaidson denied all the accusations during the CPI of financial pyramids.
Promising 10% profit on investments in the cryptocurrency market, GAS attracted thousands of customers. However, investigations by the Federal Police and the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office indicated that the company did not make real investments in Bitcoin.
Documentary about Bitcoin Pharaoh is already raising funds
Imprisoned since 2021, Glaidson's story could appear on the big screen across the country. This is because the National Cinema Agency (ANCINE) recently revealed that there is a documentary about the Pharaoh of Bitcoins in production.
The objective is to tell what is behind one of the most famous scandals in the crypto industry in Brazil.
